The fan-shaped flower holder is one of the many kinds of vases with spouts produced in Delft in the 17th century.
The earliest fan shape was the ‘quintel’:
a flower holder consisting of five little vases in a row. In time oval and heart-shaped vases were made with two or even three rows of spouts.

This flower holder has a chinoiserie decoration; the motifs are partly of European origin and partly based on the Chinese Wanli style.

The most beautiful 17th-century flower holders were made by The Greek A, a pottery factory in Delft, in the period it was owned by Adrianus Kocx. Mary II, the English wife of William III, stadholder of Holland and king of England from 1688 to 1702, loved blue and white china and earthenware. She was, of course, a good customer of The Greek A.

This modern version of the flower fan has two rows of five spouts. It is made of recycled polypropylene and can be filled with water and fresh flowers.
